Religious fashion has always been a way for women to express their faith and beliefs through clothing. As for me, I thrift most of my clothes and hardly find any religious wear when I go. One day, however, I thrifted my most prized possession: a crewneck that had an image of Noah, his ark, and a couple of animals that only said, "Noah and Friends."
I loved that crewneck and wore it constantly. I would always
get compliments on it from fellow Catholics and even some of my non-religious
friends. I believe it was the simplicity of the crewneck that made people
notice it. In a way, I was subtilty showing my religion in a way that was not
harsh, like some religious wear can be.
The confidence I would get from wearing that crewneck drew
me to want to share that feeling with others. There was only one problem: the
style of the crewneck was outdated (I did find it in a thrift store, after
all!). Because of that, I knew I would not be able to find this on normal store
shelves. I am a very crafty person, so I wanted to try my hand at making
garments that have a similar message.
I believe that there was something that drew me to the simplicity of the Old Testament story. Those are the stories I feel like are unforgettable for those that attended religious classes growing up. Because of this, the first design I created was about Jonah and the Whale.
Now, I've made a lot of projects in my time: I started
sewing at the age of 10 and transitioned to knitting and crocheting by the time
I was 14. If anyone else is also crafty, they will know that sometimes it is
hard to part with your projects that you dedicate so much time to. I had the
opposite effect; that project was the first project where I felt like I was
meant to share it with others.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, and I have made a couple
other similar projects, like Daniel and the lion's den, Moses parting the Red
Sea, and "Sampon's bad hair day." I loved making them, and I knew I
was meant to share these projects with others. That's why I started this site
and my Etsy shop.
But, if you're looking for a subtle nod to your beliefs that
showcases your spirituality, Two-by-Two Threads has something for every
religious woman. Although we are a small project right now, I am excited to see
how it grows with the response of people!
With love,
Two-by-Two Threads
